Marge Hudson
Investigator
Winnipeg, MA
Born and raised in Berens River First Nation, a remote community in northern Manitoba on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, Margorie “Marge” Hudson embodies the resilience, grace, and tenacity of her Ojibway heritage. Her spirit name, Nii Gaa Niin Makwa Ikwe, translates to Leading Bear Woman, a title that aptly captures her strength and determination.
Marge, the second oldest among her siblings (nine girls and six boys), left her community at the age of 19, embarking on a journey that would shape her into a trailblazer and a beacon of hope for Indigenous communities across Canada. While her initial aspirations led her towards a life of service as a nun, Marge chose her own unique path, one that eventually led her to Alberta in 1978.
In 1979, Marge made history as she became the first female Indigenous RCMP officer in the province of Manitoba, serving as a special constable before becoming a regular officer. Her specific focus within the RCMP was in Manitoba’s Indigenous reserves, where her work was not only impactful but also highly respected by the community members. Whenever cases in communities couldn’t be solved, they would call on Marge – and she’d solve them, earning her admiration not only locally but across Canada. Over the course of three impactful decades within the RCMP, Marge not only maintained the safety and security of the communities but also became a mentor and a trainer, guiding and shaping the careers of numerous recruits. Her passion for justice and equality fueled her advocacy against systemic racism and discrimination faced by Indigenous men and women, as well as her unwavering commitment to raising awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
Beyond her distinguished service in law enforcement, Marge has worn many hats throughout her life. She has been a consultant, a nationally recognized public and motivational speaker, and a trauma therapist just to name a few. As a Day School survivor herself, she worked tirelessly with Residential School, Day School, and 60’s Scoop Survivors, bringing healing and solace to those in need.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Marge is a loving mother, mother-in-law and a doting grandmother.
Marge’s list of accolades and certifications is as extensive as her travels. Her love for travel is rivaled only by her passion for health and fitness. She enjoys putting her culinary skills to use and immersing herself in diverse cultures.
A valued member of numerous groups, organizations, and influential bodies, Marge is sought after for her wisdom, experience, and unyielding commitment to positive change. Despite life’s trials and tribulations, she remains an unshakable pillar of strength, a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Marge has been approached on numerous occasions to have a book, documentary, and movie made about her life – a testament to her extraordinary experiences and the impact she has had on the world. She has also taken on the task of writing her own book, ensuring that her story, filled with bravery, compassion, and determination, is shared with the world.
